Vision

We envision a future characterized by the pervasive presence of networked devices, able to interface with the environment to support context-aware services. The net result will be the arising of extremely large-scale, dynamic, disconnected networks providing a huge variety of services, able to enhance the users experience by exploiting context-awareness capabilities. From a system perspective, the resulting pervasive computing & communication environments will be extremely complex systems exceeding the human ability to design them according to the conventional "predictability-based" engineering design paradigms.

What is Pervasive About

The Pervasive@CREATE-NET research team pursues a multidisciplinary approach leading to innovative solutions for pervasive computing & communication environments. These are indeeed characterized by a set of features which represent as many challenges for conventional approaches in networking and service provisioning/management, including, e.g., high level of scalability, heterogeneity, complexity and dynamism.
Key aspects of the group research agenda:

  • Focus on design methodologies and tools for pervasive computing and communication systems.
  • Beyond the “predictability” conventional (engineering) approach: design for uncertainties & autonomicity.
  • Shift in focus: from performance to robustness/resilience.
  • Evolve-ability as a constituent system property.
  • From top-down design to bottom-up bio-inspired paradigms.
