Best Paper Award @ ManFI 2015
The researchers of the Future Networks (FuN) research area at Create-Net, Roberto Riggio and Tinku Rasheed have been awarded with the Best Paper Award at the 7th IFIP/IEEE International Workshop on Management of the Future Internet (ManFI) on May 11, 2015. The workshop is a part of the IEEE/IFIP Integrated Management Symposium (IM-2015) held at Ottawa, Canada.
The awarded research work is the result of an ongoing industrial collaboration between CREATE-NET and DELL Inc. (USA). Dr. Rajesh Narayanan, a senior engineer at DELL is the third co-author. The awarded paper, "Virtual Network Function Orchestration in Enterprise WLANs" proposes an NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) based management and orchestration framework for enterprise WLANs. The paper presented the first steps towards the definition of a SFC (Service Function Chains) request model for enterprise wireless networks, and reported results of implementation and validation of VNF (Virtual Network Functions) placement algorithms.
NFV offers a new way to design, deploy and manage networking services. NFV decouples the network functions, such as network address translation (NAT), firewalling, intrusion detection, domain name service (DNS), caching etc., from proprietary hardware appliances so they can run in software. The Future Networks area at CREATE-NET is currently involved in several R&D initiatives surrounding NFV, applied to 5G mobile networks and multi-domain converged networks.
The ManFI workshop is a reference workshop in the area of Future Internet Management, addressing among others important topics such as management of virtualised networks and services, management of IaaS, PaaS, SaaS offerings, management of software defined networks, federated management of the Future Internet etc.
