Thu, 05/11/2015

Charalampos Doukas, senior researcher of the Future Media solutions in CREATE-NET, participated in the EclipseCon Europe event on November 3rd in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

The event is designed to create opportunities for the European Eclipse community to learn, explore, share and collaborate on the latest ideas and information about Eclipse and its member companies. This was the 10th event taking place in Europe. More than 600 developers attended from different backgrounds, industries, SMEs and academia.

In particular, Charalampos gave a talk during the IOT Day, which focused on exploring the different aspects of IoT technology and presenting the Open Source projects curated under the Eclipse Foundation. More than 10 IoT-related projects are hosted by the Eclipse Foundation and maintained by the community, resulting in software contributions containing more than 6M lines of code with thousands of downloads per month.

The talk titled “AGILE: An Open Source, Adoptive & Programmable IoT Gateway for Makers & Entrepreneurs”  was about the AGILE gateway, a new Open Source project that aims to build and deliver an open source (hardware & software) modular gateway for the Internet of Things. The gateway, based on open platforms, will target makers and entrepreneurs allowing to quickly prototype solutions for domains like home automation, QuantifiedSelf, environment monitoring and more. The AGILE gateway is part of a larger initiative supported by more than 15 European companies and entities, including Eurotech, Canonical, the Eclipse Foundation and Startubootcamp.

The scope of this talk was to introduce the concept to the audience, receive feedback and also potential contributions on open source projects to consider/integrate, users/developers interested in contributing/validating/testing the project. The feedback received has been very positive in terms of interest from developers to use and participate in project development. AGILE project has also been mentioned at the main EclipseCon welcoming keynote as one of the first H2020 projects that the Eclipse Foundation is taking part of.
