A Revolutionary SDN Open Source Network Operating System – ONOS developed also by CREATE-NET

Thu, 06/11/2014

The Open Networking Lab (ON.Lab), a non-profit organization founded by SDN pioneers from Stanford University and UC Berkeley, has recently launched its open source SDN operating system ONOS (Open Network Operating System).

ONOS enables agile service creation and deployment at scale on any hardware, including white boxes. This disruptive platform delivers a highly available, scalable SDN control plane featuring northbound and southbound open APIs and paradigms for a diversity of management, control, and service applications across mission critical networks. The open source software will be released and available for download on December 5th.

Founding members who are funding and contributing to the ONOS initiative include AT&T, NTT Communications, Ciena, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, NEC; and members who are collaborating and contributing to ONOS include CREATE-NET, Open Networking Foundation, Internet2, Infoblox, SRI and CNIT.

In particular, CREATE-NET is contributing to ONOS’ initiative by building a robust distributed operating system which is able to control Wide Area Networks like IP/MPLS carrier networks spanning large geographical areas. These activities are being carried out in the framework of DREAMER European project funded through GEANT GN3+ initiative.
